Understanding the Severity of your Atlanta & North Georgia Water Damage Emergency

Not all water damage is the same in terms of destruction and severity, there are three different categories you should be aware of developed by the IICRC. In this short guide, you’ll learn what each level of water damage entails so you can take action right away after your home or business sustains some kind of water damage.

Category 1

Category 1 is the least severe form of diagnosable water damage. The water in Category 1 hasn't yet been contaminated by toxins, pathogens, or sewage and doesn't present an immediate health threat to humans.

This includes water damage from broken pipes, bathtubs and sinks that have overflowed, and can even be caused from leaks in various household appliances like dishwashers, and other appliances.

Category 2

Category 2 water damage or "Gray" water damage is much more severe than Category 1. This grade of water damage includes contaminated water that can come from septic tank backups, toilets, washing machines, and other sources.

This grade of water damage is serious and should be addressed immediately as it contains significant levels of chemicals, bacteria, mold, or other pathogens hazards to human health. At Phoenix One Restoration we have all the PPE and modern equipment necessary to tackle this form of hazzardous water damage.

Category 3

Category 3 water damage or "Black" water damage is the most hazardous level of water damage and requires swift action in order to mitigate serious health risks and permanent damage to your home or business.

Black water damage can come from sewage, flood waters, seawater, river or ground water, and other sources. It is extremely unsanitary and contains high levels of toxins and disease-causing organisms. If your property is diagnosed with Category 3 water damage many items and materials will need to be removed from your property and undergo significant disinfecting. We offer all the Contents Removal and disinfecting services you'll need to tackle even the most aggressive Category 3 water damage.

Inspection & Assessment:

Within one hour of your call, our certified technicians will arrive on site anywhere in Atlanta and North Georgia and begin the inspection process of diagnosing the severity and level of water damage you're currently facing. We use state of the art equipment such as hygrometers and moisture sectors to get an accurate assessment of how much water damage repair work will need to be completed. Our technicians will identify the location of your water damage, then classify it on the IICRC's 4 class scale to determine the best cause of action.

Class 1

Class 1 water damage is the least severe and typically the easiest to manage since it has a slow absorption rate. In Class 1 water damage only a portion of the area has been affected and there is little to no wet carpet or flooring to restore.

Class 2

Class 2 water damage is more common but still easily manageable. In class 2 water damage the entire area has been affected, including moisture in both carpeting or cushioning. In these cases, we typically see water wicked at least 12 inches up the walls and water is present in structural materials. This often leaves the risk of lasting damage to the structure and contents inside a building.

Class 3

Class 3 water damage is very serious and should be treated with urgency. This class has the fastest absorption rate with ceilings, walls, carpet, sub flooring and contents all saturated with moisture. Typically the liquid comes from overhead and has whicked up the walls over 24 inches.

Class 4

Class 4 water damage means that normally low permanence materials like hardwood, concrete, and plaster have deep levels of saturation. Restoring these materials can prove to be difficult and often result in total loss.

Water Removal:

The next step is to remove all standing water using extractors. Standing water can prove to be detrimental to your home and must be removed as quickly as possible especially in any basement or crawl spaces as this quickly leads to severe mildew or mold growth. During the water removal process water is removed from the home's structure and belongings. We use a combination of extractors like our submersible pumps, truck-mounted vacuums, and portable wet and dry vacuums to draw all the water out of your home. After the standing water is extracted, further analysis occur to determine the remaining moisture levels and determine if carpeting or other flooring needs to be removed.

Drying & Dehumidifying:

After the water is extracted from your home or workspace, we begin the dehumidification and drying process. Our trucks are equipped with industrial-quality air movers and dehumidifiers that are used to dry out any excess moisture from your structure or belongings that was not able to be removed during extraction.

Cleaning & Sanitizing:

The work is far from over when all the water and moisture is removed form your water damaged home or business, thorough professional cleaning is required to neutralize any existing mold, mildew, or pathogen growth and prevent more from developing. Often, mold remediation is necessary to completely sanitize the area and prevent any future mold and pathogen growth. We may use foam, abrasive, or immersion cleaning techniques to guarantee the area is cleaned as efficiently as possible and safe for future use.

Complete Restoration:

The final step of our water damage restoration process is a complete restoration of any damaged materials that were removed during the cleaning and sanitizing phase.

In some cases restoration can be relatively simple andinvove drywall repair or carpet cleaning. Other cases the water damage restoration work can be very extensive and will require complete demolition and reconstruction of parts of your workplace or home. The pros at Phoenix One Restoration have the experience, technical know how, and care to make sure your space is completely restored to its natural state in the quickest manner possible.
